EV started in 1980 as “Earthen Vessels,” an annual summer camp experience in Vermont for inner-city youth led by the founders, Brian and Marie-Claude Thompson. Inspired to act in the Catholic tradition of social justice, the Thompsons took the name from scripture (“…we hold this treasure in earthen vessels, that the surpassing power may be of God and not from us,” 2 Corinthians 4).
In 1985, EV partnered with the Harvard Catholic Center to recruit, train, and mobilize university students to tutor and mentor EVkids during the school year. Your support enabled EV to add staff to further support these tutoring and mentoring relationships by providing essential family and school advocacy.
Since our first cohort of eight Harvard student volunteers and the children they tutored in 1985, you have helped EV change the life trajectories of hundreds of university volunteers and EVkids.
Fall 2011 has seen a 50% growth in the Afterschool Program with an inaugural class of Boston College volunteers. With your help, EV Summer Camp continues to run three sessions held at our own nine-acre camp in Vermont’s Green Mountains. Thank you for all you do.
